Dandruff particles are visible flakes of skin that have been continuously shed from the scalp. It is normal to shed some dead skin flakes as the skin is constantly renewing itself. The new cells form in the lower layers. They are gradually pushed to the surface as more new cells form beneath them. By the time they reach the surface, the cells have become flat and overlap each other like roof tiles. By then, these cells are dead and are shed from the surface all the time. They are so small that we do not notice this is happening. Also, the cells are shed in clumps, which are big enough to be seen with the naked eye as embarrassing flakes, especially when they land on dark clothing. It is often accompanied by itching. The exact cause is unknown, but various factors increase the risk. It is not related to poor hygiene, but it may be more visible if a person does not wash or brush their hair often. Dandruff can be embarrassing and hard to treat, but help is available. Fast facts on dandruff. Here are some key points about dandruff. More detail is the main article. Dandruff is a common condition, but it can be embarrassing and difficult to treat. It is not related to hygiene, but washing and brushing the hair can help remove old skin flakes. Risk factors include having certain skin or medical conditions and the use of inappropriate hair products. Various treatments are available over the counter, but more severe cases should be seen by a doctor. Causes. The exact causes of dandruff are unknown. One theory is that it is linked to hormone production, as it often begins around the time of puberty. Here we look at 1. Seborrheic dermatitis. People with seborrheic dermatitis have irritated, oily skin, and they are more likely to have dandruff. Seborrheic dermatitis affects many areas of the skin, including the backs of the ears, the breastbone, eyebrows, and the sides of the nose. The skin will be red, greasy, and covered with flaky white or yellow scales. Seborrheic dermatitis is closely linked with Malassezia, a fungus that normally lives on the scalp and feeds on the oils that the hair follicles secrete. It does not usually cause a problem, but in some people it becomes overactive, causing the scalp to become irritated and to produce extra skin cells. As these extra skin cells die and fall off, they mix with the oil from the hair and scalp, forming dandruff. Not enough hair brushing. Combing or brushing the hair regularly reduces the risk of dandruff, because it aids in the normal shedding of skin. Yeast. People who are sensitive to yeast have a slightly higher chance of dandruff, so yeast may play a part. Dandruff is often worse during the winter months and better when the weather is warmer. This may be because ultraviolet- A (UVA) light from the sun counteracts the yeast. Dry skin. People with dry skin are more likely to have dandruff. Cold winter air combined with overheated rooms is a common cause of itchy, flaking skin. Dandruff that stems from dry skin tends to have smaller, non- oily flakes. Shampooing and skin care products. Certain hair care products can trigger a red, itchy, scaling scalp. Frequent shampooing may cause dandruff, as it can irritate the scalp. Some people say not shampooing enough can cause a buildup of oil and dead skin cells, leading to dandruff, but evidence is lacking that this is true. Certain skin conditions. People with psoriasis, eczema, and some other skin disorders tend to get dandruff more frequently than others. Tinea capitis, a fungal infection also known as scalp ringworm, can cause dandruff. Medical conditions. Adults with Parkinson's disease and some other neurological illnesses are more prone to dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. One study found that between 3. HIV have seborrheic dermatitis, compared with 3 to 5 percent in the general population. Patients who are recovering from a heart attack or a stroke and those with a weak immune system may be more prone to dandruff. Diet. Not consuming enough foods that contain zinc, B vitamins, and some types of fats may increase the risk. Mental stress. There may be a link between stress and many skin problems. Age. Dandruff is more likely from adolescence through middle age, although it can be lifelong. It affects men more than women, possibly for reasons related to hormones. Treatment. Treatment aims to stop the dandruff by slowing down the reproduction of skin cells or counteracting the yeast production that might be the cause. The strategy will depend the patient's age and the severity of the condition. Shampoos and scalp preparations. Shampoos and scalp products are available over the counter at most stores and pharmacies. These can control seborrheic dermatitis, but they cannot cure it. Before using an anti- fungal shampoo, individuals should carefully try to remove any scaly or crusty patches on the scalp, as far as possible, This will make the shampoo more effective. Dandruff shampoo is available to treat dandruff in the beard. Ingredients to look out for. Most anti- dandruff or anti- fungal shampoos contain at least one of the following active ingredients: Ketoconazole: An effective anti- fungal. Shampoos containing this ingredient can be used at any age. Selenium sulfide: This reduces the production of natural oils by glands in the scalp. It is effective at treating dandruff. Zinc pyrithione: This slows down the growth of yeast. Coal tar: This has a natural anti- fungal agent. Dyed or treated hair may become stained by long- term usage. Tar soaps may also make the scalp more sensitive to sunlight, so users should wear a hat when outside. Coal tar can also be carcinogenic in high doses. Salicylic acids: These help the scalp get rid of skin cells. They do not slow down the reproduction of skin cells. Treatment can sometimes leave the scalp dry and make skin flaking worse. Tea- tree oil: Derived from the Australian Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), many shampoos now include this ingredient. It has long been used as an anti- fungal, an antibiotic, and an antiseptic. Some people are allergic to it. The best strategy is to select a shampoo containing one of these ingredients and shampoo the hair every day until the dandruff is under control. After this, they can be used less frequently. Alternating dandruff shampoo with regular shampoo may help. A specific shampoo may stop being as effective after some time. At this point, it may be a good idea to switch to one with another ingredient. Some shampoos should be left on the scalp for around 5 minutes, as rinsing too quickly will not give the ingredient time to work. Others should be rinsed at once. Users should follow the instructions on the container. When to see a doctor. It is not normally necessary to consult a doctor with dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, but sometimes dandruff can be a sign of a more serious medical condition. Medical help should be sought if: there are signs of infection, such as redness, tenderness, or swellingdandruff is very severe, or it persists after home treatmentthere are signs of eczema, psoriasis, or another skin condition. Complications are rare with dandruff, but they may result from one of the treatments. If a shampoo or scalp treatment causes irritation, the individual should cease using it and ask a pharmacist to suggest another one. A person with a weakened immune system, for example, due to HIV or AIDS, should ask their doctor about any dandruff. Dandruff in babies. Newborns and young infants often have a kind of dandruff known as cradle cap. There will be yellow, greasy, scaly patches on the scalp. It often appears within the first 2 months after birth and lasts a few weeks or months. Gently washing with baby shampoo and applying baby oil can help prevent the scales from building up. If there are signs of skin cracking or infection, if itching, swelling or bleeding occur, or if it spreads to other parts of the body, it is important to see a doctor. New solutions for dandruff? Researchers believe a special formulation that can penetrate the skin's waterproof barrier will combat excessive cell growth, oxidative stress, and inflammation. A study carried out by European researchers has suggested that the addition of llama antibodies to shampoo could be a new strategy for fighting dandruff. Written by Christian Nordqvist. People going on low- carb diets may not see a rise in their cholesterol levels. ![]() ![]() How is that possible? Because weight loss by any means can drop our cholesterol. We could go on an all- Twinkie diet and lower our cholesterol if we were unable to eat the dozen daily Twinkies necessary to maintain our weight. That’s why a good cocaine habit can lower cholesterol. Chemotherapy can drop cholesterol like a rock. Tuberculosis can work wonders on one’s waistline. Anything that drops our weight can drop our cholesterol. But, the goal isn’t to fit into a skinnier casket. The reason we care about cardiovascular risk factors like cholesterol is because we care about cardiovascular risk—the health of our arteries. Well, now we have studies that have measured the impact of low- carb diets on arteries directly, and a review of all the best studies done to date found that low- carb diets impair arterial function, as evidenced by a decrease in flow- mediated dilation—meaning low- carb diets effectively cripple people’s arteries. And, since the meta- analysis was published, another study found the same thing. A dietary pattern characterized by high protein and fat, low carbohydrate, was “associated with poorer peripheral small artery function”—again measuring blood flow into people’s limbs. Peripheral circulation is great, but what about circulation in the coronary arteries that feed our heart? There’s only been one study ever done measuring actual blood flow to the heart muscles of people eating low- carb diets, and this is it. Richard Fleming, an accomplished nuclear cardiologist, enrolled 2. SPECT scans—enabling him to actually directly measure the blood flow within the coronary arteries. He then put them all on a healthy vegetarian diet, and a year later, the scans were repeated. By that time, however, ten of the patients had jumped ship onto the low- carb bandwagon. At first, I bet he was upset, but surely soon realized he had an unparalleled research opportunity dropped into his lap. Here, he had extensive imaging on ten people following a low- carb diet, and 1. Following a low-fat diet may help dieters lose more body fat than following a low-carb diet, according to a new study. Researchers found that people in the study lost. Low-carbohydrate diets or low-carb diets are dietary programs that restrict carbohydrate consumption, often for the treatment of obesity or diabetes. High-protein, low-carbohydrate diets, like The Atkins Diet, have been widely promoted as effective weight loss plans. These programs generally recommend that dieters. What would their hearts look like at the end of the year? We can talk about risk factors all we want, but compared to the veg group, did the coronary heart disease of the patients following the Atkins- like diets improve, worsen, or stay the same? Those sticking to the vegetarian diet showed a reversal of their heart disease, as expected. Their partially clogged arteries literally got cleaned out. ![]() ![]() They had 2. 0% less atherosclerotic plaque in their arteries at the end of the year than at the beginning. What happened to those who abandoned the treatment diet, and switched over to the low- carb diet? Their condition significantly worsened. Thanks to the kind generosity of Dr. Fleming, we can actually see the changes in blood flow for ourselves. Here are some representative heart scans. The yellow, and particularly red, represent blood flow through the coronary arteries to the heart muscle. This patient went on a plant- based diet, and their coronary arteries opened right up, increasing blood flow. This person, however, started out with good flow, but after a year on a low- carb diet, significantly clogged down their arterial blood flow. This is the best science to date demonstrating the threat of low- carb diets, not just measuring risk factors, but actual blood flow in people’s hearts on different diets. Of course, the reason we care about cardiac blood flow is we don’t want to die. ![]() And, a meta- analysis was recently published that finally went ahead and measured the ultimate endpoint, death, and “low- . ![]() ![]() Ezine. ![]() How Big Is the Brain? The human brain is an amazing organ, capable of surprising feats of memory, susceptible to damage, and yet remarkably adaptable to change. Just how big is the brain? While the human brain has a structure similar to that of other mammals, what makes it so very different is its size in relation to body size. Compared to the size of our bodies, human beings have much larger brains than many other mammals. The Size of the Brain. In terms of weight, the average adult human brain weighs in at 1. In women, parts of the frontal lobe and limbic cortex (areas associated with problem- solving and emotional regulation, tend to be bigger than those of men. In men, the parietal cortex (associated with the perception of space) and amygdala (linked to social and sexual behavior) tend to be larger than those in women. Neurons are the structures that serve as building blocks of the brain and nervous system. They transmit and carry information, allowing different parts of the brain to communicate with one another as well as allowing the brain to communicate with various parts of the body. Researchers estimate that there are around 1. Does Brain Size Matter? Obviously, not all people have the same size brain. Some are larger, and some are smaller. You might find yourself wondering if brain size might be linked to characteristics such as disability or intelligence. Researchers have found that in some cases brain size can be linked to certain diseases or developmental conditions. For example, autistic children tend to have bigger brains (and earlier disproportionate brain growth) than non- autistic children. The hippocampus tends to be smaller in elderly adults suffering from Alzheimer's disease. This area of the brain is strongly associated with memory. What about intelligence? The answer to that question depends largely upon who you ask. According to one analysis of many studies that looked at this issue by Michael Mc. Daniel of Virginia Commonwealth University, bigger brains were correlated with higher intelligence. Not all researchers necessarily agree with Mc. Daniel's conclusions. Such studies also raise important questions about how we define and measure intelligence, whether we should account for relative body size when making such correlations, and what parts of the brain we should be looking at when making such determinations. It is also important to note that when looking at individual differences among people, brain size variations are relatively small. Other factors that may influence or play a pivotal role include the density of neurons inside the brain, social and cultural factors, and other structural differences inside the brain. At the age of 2. 0, I was introduced to weight training at the local community college. In college I joined the Cheerleading squad, and added daily jogging to my fitness ritual. After college, my workouts became more sporadic, especially after the birth of my first child, but I kept my daily jogging up. In 2. 00. 4, I started teaching fit track classes a weight training circuit style class and doing some personal training at the local gym I was employed at. It was there that I saw a poster for the Ms. Bikini America- Folsom Extravaganza Show. I sent in my entry form to compete in my first fitness/Ms. Bikini America show. It was an awesome experience! I remember looking at all the girls and I was so amazed by them. I ended up placing fifth which qualified me for Nationals. After that I was hooked. That same year I decided to do a figure contest at the 2. NPC Sacramento Show. I placed ninth in my division. This was the first huge show I’d ever done and NPC was giving pro cards. I wanted the muscle size and definition many of these ladies had. I love being able to challenge my body and mind, I also love sculpting my body into a strong and healthy, portioned physique. Fitness is a lifestyle for me. What has been your biggest accomplishment in the fitness field? My biggest accomplishment is the size I have put on my skinny body. I was 1. 16 lbs. What is the #1 “bang for the buck” cardio exercise I should do to burn serious calories? Before breakfast–Morning cardio for 3. Set the course on the elliptical machine to “Interval” training or uphill course to really burn those calories. It’s a good idea to switch your cardio routine every two to three months. How much weight (pounds) should I focus on losing every week? What is a safe amount to make sure I keep it off? A safe amount of weight to lose weekly is anywhere from 1 pound to 2 pounds max. What type of food or supplements should I take before and after my workouts to help me see results in gaining lean muscle and losing fat? I suggest taking BCCA’s (Branch Chain Amino Acids) before and after heavy weight lifting. I also suggest Glutamine before your workouts. Glutamine is a great supplement for holding on to lean tissue, which is so important to metabolism. Take a daily vitamin. Eat plenty of protein. I suggest Whey Protein powder, which, is a complete bio- available source of protein. Lean cuts of steak, beef and chicken. Always bake your meat, don’t deep- fry anything. Keep junk food very limited. Keep hydrated before and during workouts. Bring a water bottle to each work out. Also, make sure you get plenty of sleep. The body is growing, replenishing and building muscle when you are asleep. How do you deal with cravings for junk foods, sweets and salty food? I can stay on a diet for maybe a few weeks but I eventually get really bad cravings and binge on snacks and fast foods. Be realistic. If there is a sweet or craving that you have keep it. Don’t give it up—just moderate it. Let your self- have a “Cheat” day once a week. Look forward to that day. Try substituting your junk food for food that is similar, but healthier. For example instead of having Ice cream, have low- fat yogurt. Also, I find it good to chart everything I put in my mouth, so I can see how much I am eating. You can reflect on your food journal over the weeks and see what you need to change. Sometimes people overeat at certain times of the day. The journal will help you to see perhaps a pattern. I’m trying to create a healthy shopping list to stick with. What are some of the main foods I should include to maintain a lean and muscular physique? Low fat Yogurt, Fresh Broccoli, Lettuce for Salads, Lean steak, chicken and beef, 1. Oats, Brown rice, Apples, Oranges, Fresh Spinach, banana’s, Yams and carrots. If you must have soda, have “Diet”. I’m about 3. 5 pounds overweight. I have never started an exercise program and really don’t know where to start. What tips can you give me to get started on the right track? Start by walking for 1. If you have time and the finances, I suggest hiring a certified personal trainer. Read, read, and read! Go to any local bookstore and you will see rows of books under this topic. Stay away from fast gimmicks to lose weight. Do your research and gain knowledge. Make sure you are in good health before you start an exercise regime. Schedule a check- up with your physician. Tell your physician what you are planning to do and check to see if you have any physical limitations. Get a journal and set small goals for your self weekly. Don’t weight yourself daily, instead weight yourself weekly. To lose weight one must exercise and change their diet. The formula for weights lose is simple: “Calories in verse calories out”. I tend to eat out most of the time and really don’t know what healthy foods to order from the menu. What tips do you recommend for eating out at restaurants to make sure my diet will not suffer? Always have a plan of action and be thinking ahead. Every menu has a salad option as well as diet sodas, water etc., Order vegetables, fruit, soups and lean cuts of meat. Don’t go to restaurants that limit your choices for healthy foods. Pick the lean grilled chicken instead of the double decker hamburger with melted cheese. Pick the rice instead of the french fries. Make wise choices. Buy a calorie counter pocket guidebook. Learn the calorie content in the food you are eating. Serious dieters sometimes invest in food scales to measure their food portions at home. Make sure your portions are the size of your palm/ or fist. If the restaurant serves big portions, eat what you can and take home the rest. What exercises do you recommend for getting a bigger, rounder and fuller butt? Free barbell squats. This is an intermediate to advanced move so always use a waist belt when doing squats. One can also use the Smith- Machine to squat too. Another move is the walking lunges. You can start by doing these without weights and as the move starts to feel more comfortable to you– you can add weights. You can either add dumbbells by holding them in either hand as you lunge walk, or you can use a weighted barbell behind your shoulders. Lastly, leg presses can add girth and firmness to your gluts. What is the most challenging thing you deal with about consistently staying in top shape? Time management is a constant weekly challenge. I have a family, job, school, church and then my workouts! I keep a desk calendar at home and at my job so I can schedule everything correctly and plan ahead. The busyness of life can easily steal away your work out time if you don’t watch it. Make your work out time a high priority. Please describe your normal diet. What do you eat in a typical day to stay in shape? Breakfast: Coffee/Oats and 5 egg whites. Mid- Morning Snack: Yogurt (non- fat)Lunch: Salad and lean chicken breast. Shocking list of US foods that are BANNED in other countries for containing dangerous chemicals. Living Day to Day. With Love and Faith. Pam's and Nina's stories, written by journalist Sherry Anderson, are reprinted with permission from the Southwest Orlando Bulletin. On a quiet street in Southwest Orlando live two women whose lives have followed similar paths in more ways than they ever expected. They each have two daughters, and over the years, they have had their fair share of homework, trips to malls, and carpooling to friends' houses and after- school activities. Causes Of Over 200 Diseases. Archives and past articles from the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, and Philly.com. ![]() They also have had their own work and volunteer commitments. The similarities in their lives are noticeable, but what most people do not realize is that these women share a bond that goes beyond any neighborhood, school group, or car pool. They know and understand what it is like to face life- threatening illnesses and meet them head- on with unwavering strength and determination. Pam's Story. Pam Fogle is well- known to many families in the Southwest community. Valium withdrawal symptoms include anxiousness, insomnia, and depression. Kentucky fans left more than 800 voicemails for referee John Higgins after the team’s Elite Eight loss to North Carolina, seven of which have been flagged by law. Wherever her daughters, Jennifer and Heather, went to school, Pam also was there. She served as ADDitions coordinator at Dr. Phillips Elementary School; president of the PTA at Bay Meadows Elementary School for the first two years the school was open; treasurer and president of the PTSA at Southwest Middle School; and vice president and president of the PTSA at Dr. Phillips High School. Today, students still remember her as . Wishy- Washy. In her honor, Bay Meadows PTA annually presents the Pam Fogle Volunteer Award to one parental volunteer and one fifth- grade student who show service to the community through volunteerism. In the fall of 1. Pam and her family were looking forward to a relaxing trip to the Florida Keys before another busy school year got under way. Heather was 1. 3 and in the eighth grade at SWMS, and Jennifer was a 1. DPHS. Usually within 1. This time it lasted for three days, and I finally told my husband, Bill, that I needed to go to the emergency room. The pain continued, and doctors ordered a series of X- rays and a sonogram. The tests indicated that Pam had gallstones, and the doctor wanted her to have emergency gallbladder surgery. But Pam wanted her family members to enjoy their vacation, and she wanted to consult with her own doctor in Orlando before having surgery. She was given some medication to ease her symptoms and agreed to see a surgeon the next day, just in case her symptoms worsened and emergency surgery was needed. I thought, Well, that's what it was. After all, I had had two pelvic exams. I went home to wait. A normal range is 0 to 3. Pam was referred to Dr. Neil Finkler of the Walt Disney Memorial Cancer Center at Florida Hospital and was told that she would have to wait another week to see the doctor. My mother was very strong through all of this. Finkler, a friend gave her some valuable advice. You need to be comfortable with everything, not just the doctor.'. Finkler was in a little office across the street from the hospital, and it was packed. I knew I was in the right place. Finkler's exam detected a large mass on Pam's left ovary. The actors were great, but the story line wasn't. She would have to wait two weeks before having a complete hysterectomy and almost another week to get the pathologist's report, which confirmed that she had Stage III ovarian cancer. Finkler did not feel that I needed chemotherapy right then. I remember I asked him if I was his wife, would he recommend chemotherapy at this time, and he said definitely not, because he did not like the idea of putting toxins in the body if we didn't have to. Finkler every month and regularly had Ca. Her count stayed around 1. By October 1. 99. Chemotherapy could no longer be avoided. In January 1. 99. Pam began a series of six chemotherapy treatments, one every three weeks. I can't describe the feeling. I thought I was ready, but I wasn't. Heather had the hardest time with me losing my hair. She hated it. She didn't even want to look at me at first if I didn't have on a wig, hat or turban. She was only 1. 4, and Mom was not supposed to get sick. There were times I wish I had stayed in bed, but I didn't want to disrupt their lives.? Then I'd kick myself, or if I was still down later, then maybe a friend would do it for me, and I would get over it. I never really dwelled on the thought that I wouldn't get well. I truly felt like I would. I believe that this is the only way I could have survived physically and emotionally. I think that had a lot to do with my attitude - and the fact that my family and friends always seemed to be there whenever I might be hitting a low point. I couldn't have asked for them to be any stronger. A needle biopsy determined that it was the same cell as the ovarian cancer. In April 2. 00. 0, Pam began another round of six chemotherapy treatments. Her daughter, Heather, now a college student at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, came home last summer to care for her mother. You pick yourself up and dust yourself off. Glucose is injected into the body, and if there is any cancer present, it will show up like a hot spot. Pam feels that insurance companies are hesitant to authorize its use because it is an expensive test. Its real value to her came in the form of peace of mind. She tries not to think about what might have happened if she had not had the gallbladder attack that prompted the X- rays. She always kept up with her annual visits to the gynecologist, and she never had any discriminating pain. In her early 4. 0s, she was under the typical age for the onset of ovarian cancer. Four years ago, she also became a school employee as an office clerk at Bay Meadows. They helped look after my family with food after each treatment. The children and their parents have been so supportive. I was concerned with how the children would react to seeing me with a hat on. They still came in and hugged me as if everything was the way it should be. I guess that old saying 'When life gives you lemons, make lemonade' is true. Faith has been a constant with me. I have learned a lot from this whole experience. Life is so very precious. We should embrace every moment and learn to be more tolerant and understanding of people. We really shouldn't sweat the small stuff. I value life, family and my friends more every day. Nina's story begins in a similar way - with another medical problem leading to the diagnosis of Stage IV ovarian cancer. Nina describes herself as a full- time mother and full- time producer. She has worked for more than 2. Sesame Workshop, the producers of Sesame. Street, and currently is the executive producer of Dragon Tales, a preschool series co- produced by Sesame Workshop and Sony Columbia Tristar Television. Dragon. Tales is nominated for a Daytime Emmy as Outstanding Animated Children's Series, and when the awards ceremony is held in New York on May 1. Nina will be there as a winner, regardless of whether she comes home with the award. Dragon Tales premiered on PBS in June 1. Traveling between Orlando, New York, Los Angeles and London would be exhausting for most people, but Nina has always thrived on her work. When the year ended, she felt like she was on top of the world. I also was exercising and thought I was at a weight I should be. I had a ton of energy. I thought everyone was thriving. This was all a big surprise. She was not concerned, and the doctor confirmed that it was a benign cyst like others she had before. But the surgeon was concerned about her swollen lymph nodes, and he immediately did a needle biopsy. Again, Nina was not concerned. She assumed her lymph nodes were swollen from a recent bout of the flu. She was stunned when the doctor called her four days later with the pathology report. The surgeon's theory was that, since only a small section of the thyroid was sent to pathology for a biopsy, it was possible that this section did not have any cancer cells, and the cancer probably would have been found somewhere else in the thyroid. At this point, Nina accepted his explanation and was optimistic, because thyroid cancer has a 9. Prior to her thyroid surgery, Nina asked the doctor numerous times if she should have a CT scan to rule out cancer in other areas of her body. She began to feel pressure in her abdominal area and was having difficulty urinating. It was on a Sunday, so she called her friend, Dr. Franz Ritucci, who practices at Florida Hospital Centra Care, an urgent- care center in Lake Buena Vista. He ran a test to see if she had a urinary- tract infection, and it came back negative. Suspecting that something more serious was wrong, he urged her to go to the emergency room for a CT scan. The scan showed that she had ovarian cancer that had spread throughout her abdominal area and was in an advanced stage. Within the next two days, Nina was seen by her gynecologist and also a surgeon who specializes in women's cancers. I don't think my husband and I fully understood what had happened to us. Top on her priority list was to spend time with her daughters. She was worried about Diana finding a dress for a dance, and so the night before surgery, she went on an outing to the mall with her girls. On Thursday morning, Dr. Richard Boothby operated on Nina at the Orlando Regional Medical Center. Nina had a partial hysterectomy almost two years previously to remove a benign cyst, but her ovaries were healthy at the time and had been left behind. In this surgery, her ovaries and fallopian tubes were removed, as well as portions of her small intestine and bowel. Cancerous lymph nodes were wrapped around an artery, and after attempts to remove them from the left side of her pelvic area resulted in a nick in her artery, vascular surgery was needed. Boothby decided to leave some cancerous lymph nodes in her right pelvic area rather than risk further injury to her artery. He felt confident that all the tumors had been removed and that the cancer had not spread to any other vital organs. The surgical procedure that is done before chemotherapy begins is called debulking, and Nina said, . Best Meal Replacement Shakes . Last month, I made a somewhat drastic decision about my body that was motivated primarily by laziness. I didn’t have any more refills for my birth control pill, and I was like, “Ehhhhhhh. Don’t wanna deal. Won’t deal.” After so many years of inconvenient trips to the pharmacy and calls to my doctor, this was, apparently, the last straw. Plus, for the past year or so, I’d been having a very regular internal dialogue about whether or not to stay on the pill. I’m sure a lot of you know what I’m talking about: Should I stop taking it? I’ll keep taking it. But is it bad to still be on it? I’ll just keep taking it. But should I stop though..? My apathy led me to the conclusion I’d been slowly edging toward: I wanted to see what would happen when I stopped taking the pill. I’ve been taking these little guys for 1. My doctor put me on the pill because I was A) Really skinny. ![]() I Went Off Birth Control Pills for the First Time in a Decade, and Here's What Happened in the First Month. Menopause is defined as the absence of menstrual periods for 12 months. It is the time in a woman's life when the function of the ovaries ceases. Both weight loss and weight gain can be symptoms of depression, so talk to your doctor about any change in your weight. Do not stop taking. B) Not getting my period regularly (which was a result of A, she thought), C) Rocking some seriously angry acne on my face and body. When my period would show up every six months or so, it was extremely rude and soul- crushing. It was absurd amounts of blood and horrendous cramps. It lasted much longer than a week and made me dread going to school. The whole idea was: birth control was going to fix all this stuff. And it did! It worked great. I was one of the lucky ones who never needed to switch brands because everything became very normal and stayed that way from the get- go. Over time it soothed my acne, gave me regular periods, helped me gain weight (read: BOOBS FINALLY) and also - - MAJOR BONUS!! Birth control pills were my friends. Until they weren’t. We’re back in present day, I just want to binge- watch all the . The nurse said, “Cool. ALSO DO NOT FORGET TO USE CONDOMS!!!!!” Condoms aren’t that much of a nuisance to me and I think they are just. My boyfriend feels the same, so that aspect of this choice was filed under No Big Deal. Step two was GOOGLING. I googled “what to expect when you go off the pill” and many permutations thereof. It was calming and helpful to pore through the comments sections of different articles and read about different women’s experiences. I started to think of the next four weeks as a tiny personal science experiment, and became really amped up about learning more about my body. Because, again, for basically as long as I’ve been a sexual being, I’ve been on birth control. What’s gonna HAPPEN!, ya know? For the most part, Week One was uneventful, with one very notable and fantastic exception. Within a couple days, my libido came back in FULL FORCE. It had been on hiatus for a while, apparently. In retrospect, the libido- sucking aspect of the pill happened in slow motion, to the point that I hadn’t even really noticed it was missing or that anything was different, which is kind of horrifying. I chalked up any relative lack of desire to being older and having been in a relationship for four years. However, once I stopped taking the pills, I was starting to actively crave sex with much more frequency. Happy to have this crucial part of my humanity back in action, I continued on to Week Two. Week Two. Exactly one week after going off the pills, I had terrible, terrible cramps late that night into early that morning. Popped two Ibuprofen from my angel roommate, headed out the door and felt fine throughout the day. But the cramps felt SUSPICIOUSLY just like my PMS cramps I'd get the week/few days leading up to my period. I used the Internet and found out about Mittelschmerz - - that’s the name for cramps that come in the middle of your cycle, about 1. Could have been that? Because my body was confused? Could it have been the past- its- prime onion I put in my chili? Who can say? Not me, I got a C in high school biology. JUST SELF- REPORTING, dudes. During this week, I over- analyzed every tiny thing that happened in the realm of my body and mind that was even slightly different than normal and attributed it to going off the pill. Here’s that list. IT’S THE NO BIRTH CONTROL THING! DEFINITELY BECAUSE I STOPPED THE PILL! LACK OF PILL! HOT FLASHES BECAUSE NO MORE BIRTH CONTROL! I’m pretty sure none of the above had anything to do with my pill- less lifestyle, buuuut then again, who knows. I am feeling very clenched- teeth emoji about this. For the past few years, my skin has been really clear and nice and I just wash it with water and we get along great. So when I started noticing more and more pimples pop up on my chin and around my hairline, I was not pleased. I’m even noticing it on my back and chest, which is officially Not Cool. I didn’t think I’d care this much about the acne returning - - I had read that it was a common symptom, but didn’t freak out about it. Once it started happening, though, I felt betrayed by my body. Week 4. I made this note at the beginning of the week: It's like the calm before the storm over here.. I, uh, got two new pimples on my forehead that are small? But otherwise.. I feel really balanced and haven't felt any different physically. And at the end of the week, on Saturday, I GOT MY PERIOD! I really didn’t think that was going to happen. And, what’s more, it was a normal period in most senses. I actually had fewer cramps, and it was lighter and shorter than usual. I dodged the going- off- birth- control bullet of going right back to whatever put you on the pill in the first place (in my case: HELL PERIODS that took their sweet time). I’m not sure what will happen this coming month, but I was very pleasantly surprised that I had a fully average period my first month off the pill. So, here’s where I’m at: I’ve got one major pro, which is my sex drive’s rise from the dead, and one major con, which is my newfound acne woes. And, as much as I can certainly tolerate a condom every now and again, I’m not sure how sustainable they are as a long term birth control method. Plus, I'm interested in trying something that doesn't require a daily task. And so, drumroll please, I’m going to go ahead and play hormonal birth control roulette and get an IUD. With any luck, the pimples’ll retreat but the libido will hang out. Ultimately, I loved having a reason to really listen and tune into my body. It was exciting to see how this daily pill had been changing me and find out how my body functions without it. What about you guys? Anyone go off the pill recently, or think about doing it? What were your experiences? Any IUD fans out there? I’m really fired up about some insurance companies still not paying for birth control years after the Affordable Care Act was passed. If you are too, you can sign Planned Parenthood’s petition here. |
